Top Family-Friendly Things to Do in Madison, Wisconsin

Wisconsin Union Terrace

I used to work for UW Madison, specifically at the Wisconsin Union Terrace, so I can say this without bias. One of the absolute best places to spend your time in Madison is at the Terrace, if you can find a seat that is!

Kick back and soak in the picturesque views of Lake Mendota at the Wisconsin Union Terrace. Known to locals as "The Terrace," it's a perfect spot for families to enjoy outdoor concerts, movies by the lake or just the simple pleasure of the iconic sunburst chairs.

Grab a pitcher of beer to share with your whole table and watch the sun set. Learn more about it at The Wisconsin Union Terrace.

To be completely honest, the food is not a knockout, but the ambiance and views are unbeatable! Before or after, stroll State Street and explore the downtown shops and restaurants. It's probably worth it to pay for a parking ramp spot, otherwise pray for luck on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Olbrich Botanical Gardens

Explore the tranquility of 16 acres of outdoor gardens, including the whimsical Thai Pavilion and the blooming Rose Garden. It's an oasis of serenity and beauty that delights the senses of both young and old. And it's completely free! Open every day from 10am-4pm, this is the perfect way to spend an hour or two solo or with the ones you love. Although free admission, there is cost to access the conservatory.

The Biergarten at Olbrich Park

Adjacent to the gardens, the Olbrich Beer Garden offers a selection of craft beers and non-alcoholic options. Enjoy a refreshing drink with views of the lush landscape and the sounds of local musicians on select evenings. Don't forget to try their giant soft pretzels!

The Biergarten is basically the Wisconsin Union Terrace but way more laid-back, with comparable views. I almost feel like this is a hidden gem of Madison! As a parent, I personally enjoyed this more relaxed atmosphere with young kids. They have a sand box for kids to play and often have food trucks on-site. Otherwise, bring some takeout from any of the Atwood neighborhood restaurants, or hop on over after your visit to Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

New Glarus Brewing Self-Guided Tour

Just a short drive from Madison, the New Glarus Brewing Company is renowned for its Spotted Cow beer and other brews. If you're not familiar with Wisconsin or Spotted Cow, let it be known that you cannot get Spotted Cow anywhere outside Wisconsin. So you will need to make a trip! Take a self-guided tour and learn about the brewing process. While they don't serve food, they encourage picnicking with treats from local eateries. There are lovely outdoor seating areas, a gift shop and root beer for the kiddos.

Henry Vilas Zoo

A visit to Madison wouldn't be complete without a trip to the Henry Vilas Zoo. This admission-free zoo is home to a wide variety of animals and the learning opportunities are as abundant as the fun.

Madison Children's Museum

With hands-on exhibits and interactive programs, the Madison Children's Museum sparks imagination and encourages exploration for all ages. Admission is required.

State Street & Capitol Square

Wander down State Street, the pedestrian-friendly thoroughfare lined with shops, restaurants and entertainment options, leading right up to the grand Wisconsin State Capitol building. Don't miss the farmers' market on the square if you're here on a Saturday morning!

Prairie Moraine Park or Capital Springs Recreation Area

For those traveling with dogs, these parks offer extensive trails and open spaces. It's perfect for a game of fetch or a leisurely walk amid nature.

Day Trips

Devil's Lake State Park

Only one hour away, this is one of the best places to camp and hike!

Foodie Finds in Madison

Madison is a food lover's dream, boasting an array of dining options from farm-to-table bistros to family-friendly restaurants. Don't leave without trying some local cheese curds, and if you're here in summer, the Dane County Farmers' Market offers a bounty of fresh produce and local delicacies.

There are literally too many to count, but here are my faves!

Asian

Double 10 Mini Hotpot: It’s a whole experience and one of our first restaurants we tried in Madison. Nic and I really love this place and always leave way too full. The guy who works there is so nice, too. You know I love that good service! Perfect for spending time with someone. It's not fast food in any way.

Hot N Spicy: A hidden gem in Viet Hoa's grocery store. Best pho and pad Thai ever, takeout only.

Saigon noodles: Vietnamese, perfect for groups.

Global Market: Food court vibes but perfect for those who have different tastes. Hit or miss for food quality, but you absolutely need to stop for boba, Dumpling House and Nice Flavor Stir Fry.

Ha Long Bay: Asian, lots of different cuisines but very hard to get a table. Takeout suggested.

Bloom Bake Shop

Pizza

Ian’s Pizza: The mac and cheese pizza is a Madison must-have staple. Absolutely delicious. You can have it all!

Salvatore’s Tomato Pies: More quirky and fancy pizza, my husband's all-time favorite!

Fine Dining

Heritage Tavern: Very expensive but incredible.

Samba: A Brazilian steakhouse.

Tornado Room: Best steak, you will be stuffed. Fancy date night or special occasion.

Harvey House: This restaurant wins all the awards. An upscale supper club vibe with some of the best food you can get in Madison!

Quirky one-of-a-kind Places

Weary Traveler Freehouse: It’s a quirky place and has great options for vegans/vegetarians.

Lao Laan Xang: Also great for dietary restrictions.

Banzo (Mediterranean): I dream about the falafel still!
